Keyboard Controls (Alternative Scheme)

The Alternative keyboard scheme exists for players whose hands cramp on the Regular layout or who migrate from other action games with different defaults. No Rest for the Wicked does not yet offer per-key remapping, so Alternative is the only official way to shift combat inputs without third-party tools — which we do not recommend due to anti-cheat and stability concerns in online Together Realms.

Why Choose Alternative?

Alternative reassigns several combat and utility keys while keeping WASD movement intact. Players who dodge with a thumb key near the movement cluster, or who want light attack off the mouse, often report smoother sessions on Alternative. There is no damage or input-lag advantage — purely ergonomics. Try both schemes in Sacrament before committing; switching costs nothing.

Movement & Defensive Actions

Movement remains on WASD with sprint on shift or a nearby key depending on patch notes. The critical difference is usually dodge placement: Alternative may move dodge off Space to a key your left hand reaches without lifting from movement. This matters in Cerim Crucible where floor 5 grants a respec shrine and floors beyond demand frame-perfect rolls against Cyvion on floor 10. Fatigue from awkward pinky reaches causes real deaths.

Blocking and parrying occupy their own keys, still consuming Focus on block impact. Monitor the Focus bar during Breach Hardcore runs where healing opportunities are scarce. Equip Load still modifies roll distance — Alternative does not change physics.

Offensive Bindings

Light and heavy attacks may sit on keyboard keys rather than mouse buttons in Alternative, or use a hybrid where one attack stays on mouse. Consult in-game Settings → Controls for the live list; Moon Studios adjusts labels between Early Access patches. Focus abilities and staff incantations share the same cooldown rules regardless of scheme — Intelligence and Faith builds using Falling Sky staff should confirm cast keys before entering co-op.

Utility & Social

Interact, map, inventory, and emote keys mirror Regular with different physical positions. In Together co-op (January 2026+), quick communication and item pickup responsiveness matter when four players scramble for Fallen Embers loot. Standardize scheme choice within your Realm group to avoid confusion during callouts like "dodge left."

Alternative Scheme Migration Guide

Switching from Regular: open Settings → Controls → Alternative, then enter Sacrament training area or meadow with weak enemies. Spend fifteen minutes repeating dodge-block-light-heavy sequence until new key positions feel natural. Do not switch mid-Crucible run — finish current attempt on familiar layout first.

Key Position Reference Notes

Document your live Alternative bindings via screenshot from Settings screen — community guides often reference Regular defaults. Share screenshot with co-op partners when calling dodge directions. Intelligence casters verify staff cast key distinct from block key to prevent accidental Focus drain.

Ergonomic Recommendations

  • Keep wrist straight during long Breach sessions — take breaks hourly.
  • Alternative may reduce mouse dependency for players with RSI concerns.
  • High polling rate mice optional — game reads deliberate inputs not jitter.
  • Mechanical keyboard actuation force personal preference only.

Performance and Input Lag

Alternative scheme offers no frame advantage over Regular — both send identical action commands to game simulation. Online Together Realms latency affects dodge feel regardless of scheme — wired connection recommended for host. See Together co-op guide technical section.
